The Common Crop Insurance Policy Basic Provisions state that insurance coverage ends on the earliest of the following: total destruction of the insured crop, harvest of the insured crop, final adjustment of a loss, abandonment of the insured crop, or the calendar date for the end of insurance period. The Sugar Beet Crop Provisions define harvest as the topping and lifting of sugar beets in the field.

Due to difficult harvest conditions, some sugar beet processors are indicating they will accept harvested sugar beets stored in clamps. As a result, the Risk Management Agency (RMA) has been asked to extend insurance coverage to sugar beets stored in clamps.

When the processor agrees to accept harvested sugar beets stored in clamps, RMA authorizes continued insurance coverage up to seven days after the clamp was started, but no later than the calendar date for the end of the insurance period listed for the county. Any sugar beets from insured acreage placed in a clamp that are not delivered directly to the sugar beet processing factory by the earlier of seven days after the clamp was started, or the calendar date for the end of the insurance period listed for the county, will be considered undamaged and the production guarantee will be assessed for such acreage as determined by the insured’s approved insurance provider. If less than an entire field of sugar beets will be placed in a clamp, the acreage from which the sugar beets were lifted and placed in a clamp must be specifically identified.
