RALEIGH, N.C., Aug. 30, 2021 — The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) has expanded crop insurance coverage to North Carolina triticale producers for the 2022 crop year. Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye and can be covered through this insurance plan. The final date to apply for crop insurance coverage for the 2022 crop year is September 30, 2021.

The triticale plan derived from the Federal Crop Insurance Act’s 508(h) process, which allows private parties to develop insurance products that are: (1) in the best interests of producers, (2) follow sound insurance principles and (3) are actuarially appropriate.

Federal crop insurance is critical to the farm safety net. It helps producers and owners manage revenue risks and strengthens the rural economy. Coverage for triticale is now available in Anson, Cumberland, Halifax, Hyde, Northampton, Perquimans, Robeson, and Stanly counties. RMA is authorizing additional flexibilities due to coronavirus while continuing to support producers, working through Approved Insurance Providers (AIPs) to deliver services, including processing policies, claims and agreements. RMA staff are working with AIPs and other customers by phone, mail and electronically to continue supporting crop insurance coverage for producers.
