TOPEKA, KANSAS, June 29, 2018 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) today announced the expansion of crop insurance for the crop triticale to 19 additional counties in Kansas, which brings the total number of counties with the triticale program to 34. Those interested in purchasing crop insurance for triticale for the 2019 crop year must do so by the sales closing date, Sept. 30.

Crop insurance for triticale, which is a cross between wheat and rye, first became available in 2018 to select counties in California, Idaho, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. The plan derived from the Federal Crop Insurance Act’s 508(h) process, which allows private parties to develop insurance products that are: (1) in the best interests of producers, (2) follow sound insurance principles and (3) are actuarially appropriate.

“We are excited to expand the availability of the triticale insurance plan within Kansas. Producers have already been showing an interest in diversifying their farm operations. By expanding triticale coverage, producers can incorporate an additional crop in their rotation and be assured that crop insurance is there in the event of a natural disaster,” said RMA Regional Office Director Rebecca Davis.

The triticale plan provides coverage for damage resulting from naturally occurring events. It is similar to other individual yield-based insurance plans and uses a producer’s Actual Production History to establish the insurance guarantee. Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA Agent Locator.
